Shirley Emma Totten (June 21, 1936 - October 7, 2016) was a remarkable woman with many accomplishments. As a young woman in the early 1950s, she was in the Air Force (pictured). She also had the unique experience of working with some of the earliest computers, when they were so large they filled an entire room. For most of her life, Shirley was a dedicated librarian with a love of reading and books.
Shirley was always a very private woman but she was deeply impacted by her family’s history with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Her older brother, Orrie, had Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) and passed away when he was only 17 years old. Her sister, Eva, had 13 children and 2 of her sons were diagnosed with DMD, who sadly also passed away in their teens. One of Eva’s daughters, June, also had two sons with DMD, who passed away at 16 years old and 20 years old, respectively. These personal experiences drove Shirley to make a truly remarkable gift to MDC.
Something her family didn’t know about her was that Shirley was also an avid investor and planned in her will to leave a meaningful gift to MDC. She also had hundreds of books and proceeds from the sale of these books were to be donated to MDC, as well. Shirley has left a lasting legacy that will not only be lovingly remembered by her family and friends but she will also be remembered by the impact she has made in the neuromuscular community, through her truly generous gift left in her will to MDC.
